A PERFECT CIRCLE: THIRTEENTH STEP 2003-2004
BERLIN, GER [COLUMBIA HALLE]

My friend and I skipped the last two lessons at school because we didn’t want to be late to the concert. It took 2 hours to get to Berlin but as we finally reached the concert hall were very surprised: Just a few Deftones fans were waiting in front of the little building. We thought they would play in a huge concert hall but we were happy as we saw they didn’t. We could easily see the side entrance where the busses were standing and we waited with the guys of the press if we could see someone of APC. I think Jeordie was there a couple of times but it was too far away so I’m not sure. We decided to wait in front of the main entrance of the hall because we wanted to stand in the first row. It started to rain while we were waiting but it was not a problem for us. The doors opened about 6:30 p.m. Somehow we got a place in the first row (on the left side of the stage, of course ;-).
The first band Revolution Smile came on the stage very quickly. They’re not bad. The singer and lead guitarist snatched off the strings twice but he acted very cool in this situations. Many people were waiting for APC (and I guess there were a few that really wanted to see the Deftones). After the setting was changed the lights went out and people started screaming. We could hear a few chords of Lullaby and as the light was switched on again they played Pet. Maynard was standing behind those curtains, as always. It was great to hear that powerful song live. During the concert Jeordie was talking to Billy and James Iha (James wore a strange glittering jacket) and they were laughing. I would like to know about what…..After the curtains fell down Maynard was standing there like a yeti, you couldn’t see his face because of his long hair. It was funny to look at him. Most of the time he was standing with his back to the audience. He was singing to the curtains (it was a little ironic as he sang “You don’t…You don’t…You don’t see me”…lol). I don’t think he recognized that the audience was on the other side, maybe he needs glasses. The others, however, were not that shy. At the end of the concert James Iha sang “Fuck you…Fuck you…” while Jeordie was playing bass. He had a few solo bass parts which sounded fantastic.
As the concert was over I couldn’t believe that they really played an hour, it seemed like just 5 minutes to me. They didn’t throw many things off the stage, just a few bottles of Evian and Jeordie threw his drink into the crowd (damn, I couldn’t catch it). We didn’t want to see the Deftones so we went to the merchandising stuff where we got those nice longsleeves and after that we went to the fence outside the hall to have a look at the tour busses again. And we hoped that they would come out, of course. We stood there and talked to two others and it came out that the women ( I think her name was Bianca) was also a big fan of Jeordie. So we talked about him for a long time. I thought “Man, we’ll never meet them. Why should they come out?” Suddenly my friend knocked me and said "Look!” I saw nothing. But after a few seconds I saw that James Iha was standing there at the snack bar that was close to us. I thought it couldn’t be true, it must be a look-alike. But it wasn’t, he was there with some girls and he signed my booklet of Thirteenth Step and my friend’s ticket. There were about 5 people standing outside because the others were waiting for the Deftones. And we were happy about that. We kept waiting at the fence and then we saw Billy. We called his name and he really came to the fence, opened the gate and signed everything we gave him. What a gentleman! We asked him if he could ask Jeordie to come out and he promised he would. I was like: ”He will never come.” First nothing happened but after a while we saw a shadow walking towards us. It was Jeordie! Oh my god!!! We were so excited. He was smoking a cigarette. I still can’t believe that it was him. He also opened the gate and signed stuff. Luckily the two guys we were talking with before that happened had a camera. I asked if they could take a picture of Jeordie and me. So Jeordie gave me a hug and they photographed it. I felt like I was going to die. I will never wash myself again ;-) God touched me! He is very kind to his fans. I gave my address to Bianca and I hope to see that picture one day. Maynard and Josh didn’t come out but I was too happy about meeting Jeordie that I couldn’t be disappointed by that. It was the best concert I’ve ever seen. We were back in our hometown at 2:45 a.m. but was not tired or anything. Just happy…
